As a Black British woman, Hirsch has experienced firsthand the subtle and overt racism that pervades British society. Through a series of powerful essays, she explores the impact of these experiences on her own sense of self and her place in the world.
Hirsch argues that the concept of Britishness is deeply rooted in whiteness, and that Black Britons are often forced to navigate a society that is not always welcoming or inclusive. She challenges the idea that Britain is a post-racial society, and argues that racism is still a major problem that needs to be addressed.
But Brit(ish) is more than just a condemnation of racism. It is also a celebration of Black British culture and identity. Hirsch writes about the strength and resilience of the Black community, and the ways in which Black Britons have contributed to British society.
She also explores the complex and often contradictory experiences of Black Britons who feel both British and African. Hirsch argues that it is possible to be both Black and British, and that these identities are not mutually exclusive.
Brit(ish) is a timely and important book that sheds light on the experiences of Black Britons in the 21st century. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the complexities of race, identity, and belonging in Britain today.
