Sister Helen Prejean is a Catholic nun who has spent her life fighting for the abolition of the death penalty. In her book Dead Man Walking, she tells the story of her six years on death row with Patrick Sonnier, a convicted murderer.
Sonnier was sentenced to death for the murder of two teenage boys. Prejean was assigned to be his spiritual advisor, and she quickly came to see him as a complex and flawed human being. Sonnier was a product of a violent and abusive childhood, and he had made many bad choices in his life. But Prejean also saw that he was capable of love and redemption.
Over the course of six years, Prejean visited Sonnier regularly on death row. She talked to him about his life, his crimes, and his hopes for the future. She also helped him to prepare for his execution.
On the day of Sonnier's execution, Prejean was with him in the execution chamber. She held his hand as he received the lethal injection. Sonnier's last words were, "Thank you, Sister. I'm sorry."
Prejean's book Dead Man Walking is a powerful indictment of the death penalty. She shows that the death penalty is not a deterrent to crime, and that it is often used to execute innocent people. She also shows that the death penalty does not bring closure to the families of victims. Instead, it only creates more pain and suffering.
Dead Man Walking is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the death penalty. It is a powerful and moving book that will change the way you think about this issue.
