The Amazing Adventures of the Man Who Rescued a Million Yiddish Books
In the aftermath of the Holocaust, millions of Yiddish books were lost. The Nazis had burned them, looted them, and destroyed them in an attempt to wipe out Jewish culture. But one man, Aaron Lansky, was determined to save what was left.
Lansky was born in 1934 in New York City to Polish Jewish immigrants. He grew up speaking Yiddish at home, and he developed a deep love for the language and culture. After graduating from college, Lansky worked as a librarian at the New York Public Library. In 1975, he founded the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, with the mission of preserving and promoting Yiddish literature.

Lansky's first major project was to collect Yiddish books from around the world. He traveled to Europe, South America, and Israel, visiting synagogues, libraries, and private homes. He found books in attics, basements, and even in garbage dumps. By the end of the 1980s, he had collected over a million Yiddish books.
But Lansky's work was not finished. He wanted to make the books accessible to as many people as possible. He began to digitize the books and make them available online. He also organized exhibitions, lectures, and other events to promote Yiddish culture.
Today, the National Yiddish Book Center is the world's largest repository of Yiddish books. The center's collection includes everything from children's books to religious texts to works of literature. The center also offers a variety of programs and services to promote Yiddish culture, including classes, workshops, and public lectures.
Aaron Lansky is a true hero. He has saved a million Yiddish books from destruction and made them accessible to people all over the world. His work has helped to preserve and promote Yiddish culture, and to ensure that the language and its literature will continue to thrive for generations to come.
