Aisling Juanjuan Shen's captivating novel, "Princess Kaiulani of Hawai'i," transports readers back to the tumultuous era of the late 19th century, a time when colonialism and imperialism cast their shadows over the once-independent kingdom.

Kaiulani, born in 1875 to High Chiefess Miriam Likelike and Prince David Kalākaua, was a member of the Kamehameha dynasty, the ruling family of Hawai'i. From a tender age, she showed extraordinary intelligence, charm, and a deep love for her people.

As Kaiulani blossomed into a young woman, she became a symbol of Hawaiian pride and independence. She traveled the world as a representative of her kingdom, captivating audiences with her eloquence and beauty. But beneath her glamorous exterior lay a heart heavy with concern for the future of her homeland.

In 1893, the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by a group of American businessmen and missionaries. Kaiulani, just 18 years old, was forced to flee the palace and watch helplessly as her beloved kingdom crumbled.

Undeterred, Kaiulani dedicated her life to fighting for the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty. She traveled to Washington, D.C., where she lobbied the American government for support. Her efforts, however, were met with indifference and rejection.

Heartbroken and disillusioned, Kaiulani returned to Hawai'i in 1897. She lived her remaining days in seclusion, never marrying or having children. On March 6, 1899, at the age of 23, she succumbed to tuberculosis, a disease she contracted during her travels.

Kaiulani's legacy lived on long after her death. She became an icon of Hawaiian resistance and a symbol of the tragic consequences of colonialism. Aisling Juanjuan Shen's novel brings her story to life with sensitivity, historical accuracy, and a touch of magic.

"Princess Kaiulani of Hawai'i" is a must-read for anyone interested in Hawaiian history, the lives of influential women, or the complexities of colonialism. Shen's storytelling prowess and meticulous research transport readers to another time and place, leaving them captivated by the life and legacy of a remarkable princess.
