Rameses III was born in the city of Pi-Ramesses in the Nile Delta. He was the son of Pharaoh Seti I and Queen Tuya. Rameses III had a number of siblings, including his brother Pharaoh Amenmesse and his sister Princess Henutmire.

Rameses III ascended to the throne after the death of his father in 1186 BC. He inherited a kingdom that was at the height of its power and prosperity. Egypt controlled a vast empire that stretched from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north.
