The Life and Legend of Mithradates is a fascinating account of the life and times of one of Rome's most formidable enemies. This book tells the story of Mithradates VI, King of Pontus, who fought three wars against the Roman Republic and nearly conquered the Mediterranean world.
Mithradates was born in 120 BC into a royal family in the kingdom of Pontus, in what is now Turkey. He was a gifted child, and he quickly mastered the art of war. When he was just 11 years old, he became king of Pontus. Mithradates was a brilliant military strategist and a master of diplomacy. He was also a ruthless and ambitious king who was determined to create a vast empire.
In 88 BC, Mithradates launched the First Mithridatic War against the Roman Republic. The war lasted for six years, and it ended with a treaty that gave Mithradates control of much of Asia Minor. In 74 BC, Mithradates launched the Second Mithridatic War. This war lasted for four years, and it ended with another treaty that gave Mithradates control of even more territory.
In 63 BC, Mithradates launched the Third Mithridatic War. This war lasted for four years, and it ended with a decisive Roman victory. Mithradates was forced to flee from Pontus, and he eventually committed suicide. Mithradates was a brilliant military strategist and a master of diplomacy. He was also a ruthless and ambitious king who was determined to create a vast empire.
The Life and Legend of Mithradates is a gripping tale of war, conquest, and betrayal. It is a must-read for anyone interested in ancient history or the history of warfare.
