Grave of the Fireflies is a 1988 Japanese animated war film written and directed by Isao Takahata. It is based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka. The film tells the story of two orphaned children, Seita and Setsuko, who struggle to survive in post-war Japan.

The film opens with Seita and Setsuko boarding a train to the countryside. They are accompanied by their mother, who is dying from tuberculosis. Seita promises his mother that he will take care of Setsuko, and the two children set off on their own.
